November Birthstone: Topaz
Topaz is a gemstone steeped in history, appearing as far back as biblical texts, and was considered by the ancient Egyptians to be closely connected to the sun god, Ra, based on its vibrant yellow colouring.
The early yellow stones thought to be topaz were, in fact, most likely not, but rather citrine (November’s second birthstone), chrysolite or zircon. We now know that the bright November birthstone comes in a spectrum of breathtaking colours. The most precious and highly prized of these is the deep, sunset tinted Imperial Topaz which was, for years, only allowed to be worn and owned by members of the royal family.
To date, topaz has been found across the world from Pakistan to Brazil, Australia and Mexico. This gorgeous and popular stone is actually crystal clear in its purest form, but, poetically, gains its colour and lustre from ‘impurities’.
Spiritually, topaz is considered to aid in communication and self-expression, making it popular among the creative communities, and has been used in traditional medicine to treat asthma and even quick tempers. It was also considered by the Europeans during the Middle Ages to have the power to break magical spells.
Today, topaz is traditionally given as a gift to celebrate the fourth wedding anniversary, and is a firm favourite among our Bounty Candle customers!
