March Birthstone: Aquamarine

Presented in deep, ethereal tones of blue and blue-green, the Aquamarine is the birthstone of the March baby, and the celebratory gift at 19 years of marriage.

Its name is derived from the Latin for ‘seawater’, and it was traditionally worn by sailors as far back as Ancient Greek and Roman times to protect them on perilous ocean journeys. By Vassil (Own work) [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons

This dreamy gem is very durable and has been found in a variety of countries across the globe, including Australia, Zimbabwe, Myanmar, Pakistan and China, but the highest producer of the Aquamarine is Brazil, where once was discovered a stone weighing in at an impressive 100,000 carats.

Mythically, Aquamarine was said to have originated with the mermaids, leading to its association with the sea and sailing. During the Middle Ages it was associated with the planet Neptune, and is still considered among crystal healers to aid in confidence, calm, clarity in communication and the reunion of parted lovers.

Historically, the Aquamarine was also believed to aid in the healing of varicose veins, sore throat, arthritis and eye irritations.

One of the most famous Aquamarine sets is that given to Queen Elizabeth II, who was gifted a breathtaking tiara, necklace, earrings and brooch by the Brazilian people upon her coronation in 1953.
