January Birthstone: Garnet
The gorgeous garnet was named for the seeds of the pomegranate, with its deep red and clear appearance, but this beautiful gemstone also appears in green, blue or even clear besides its traditional red spectrum.
The garnet’s spiritual profile is rich, said to symbolize deep friendship, peace and prosperity. It was believed to act as a mirror to the wearer’s own behaviour, bringing good luck to those who were good, and bad luck to those who were bad. It was worn to protect warriors in battle, and even used in the very early treatment of battle wounds.
Incredibly popular in the Ancient Egyptian and Ancient Roman courts, jewellery containing garnet has been found in tombs dating back to 3100BC, and was used in the rich, inlaid interiors of wealthy homes from Bohemia (now Romania) to Egypt.
This beautiful gemstone is hard and durable, and is traditionally gifted for a January birthday or a 19th wedding anniversary. Garnet is, however, also given as a parting gift to traveling loved ones, said to protect them from danger and heartache. The garnet also appears in the writings of many faiths, from the Bible to the Quran, and is held dear as a symbol of love, hope and protection.
